There’s no written snow guarantee in Switzerland – neither at this time or later/earlier in the year. However, if you chose Zermatt, Saas Fee, Grindelwald or Laax in January, you are on the safe side since the ski slopes there are very high up (you’ll have to use different ways of transportation before you actually arrive where one skis).

I could of course give you a long list of alternate Swiss destinations where skiing is as fantastic as in the four mentioned places. The question is only: Would you believe me? I suggest to stick with what you already have in mind.

How long is a piece of string? That should answer your question if a hotel or an appartment is better. As it’s been said here a million times: It depends. In this case on your budget or/and on your taste. Swiss hotels (especially the ones in tourist traps such as the ones you mentionned) are VERY expensive, I myself am tempted to say that they are only worth their price in limited cases. The Swiss themselves tend to go for an appartment (good chalets are the same price or even more expensive than a hotel). I’m sure more people will come up soon with their ideas of what should be good for you. Just make sure you’ll do the right choice then…

Happy skiiing in Willy Tell’s own country, anyway :-)

Well i am sorry if this does not go for you but i couold suggest going to France, Val d’isere. It is a skiing resort with amazing slopes and a reasonable amount of turists. It is close to all of the famous discos and the food there is exellent! It is a place for everybody and people from rich to poor go there. A good hotel is barm de lours (i am not sure about the spelling) and there is also a club med which is well locate and has good service. The snow there is gauranteed almost everyday except for summer>
