   Matheran (which means “forest at the top”) offers unpolluted air, beautiful surroundings and shady walks with marvellous panoramic views. Hugh Pointz Mallet, the collector of Thane, discovered this hill station in May 1950. This hill station is a haven for visitors escaping Mumbai’s humidity. Matheran is at an attitude of 2,500 feet. The sylvan green surroundings, the beckoning silence of the woods and the serene surroundings of this hill station are quite inviting (avoid visiting Matheran on weekends if your prefer peace and quiet). As a precautionary measure against frequent slides, the line used to close during the monsoons (July-August) till recently, but now passenger services continue even during rainy months.    Hotel Royal is the best for this season… I have visited this hotel in july 2009. The service, location, view from the room n the rates are very good. Hotel Royal, Matheran-9423091638

   Mathern has many good hotels at very reasonable rates. Visit www.a2ztravelindia.com to get the best rates for the hotels.You can veiw pictures and get more information from the site only.    Rugby hotel in Matheran is one of the oldest in Matheran.. It has the feel of the typical British era.. its a nice and expensive hotel.
   You could also try Usha Ascot.. Supposed to be good. I haven’t been to this one..
