its good to book a hotel in colombo where you can do all the shopping, sightseeing etc.its the commercial hub. and its very convenient. im not sure how much you are willing to pay but here are some links to the top hotels in colombo.

Hilton Colombo Hotel From USD 213
Hilton Residence Hotel Colombo From USD 186
Ramada Hotel Colombo From USD 92
Taj Samudra Hotel Colombo From USD 173

you can find info and links to the hotels on http://www.asiahotels.com/Sri_Lanka/Colombo/citycentre_hotels/

as for where to visit, i would definitely recommend shopping.its not that expensive and totally worth it. all the major shops, malls could be found in colombo close to these hotels.

    ODEL
House of fashion are obviously the best department stores.

    Majestic City
    Crescat boulevard
liberty plaza are the malls.you can basically find anything and everything.

also i would recommend you to go down south(Galle),arugam bay, trincomalee where the beaches are.they are beautiful and definitely a MUST visit.

colder weather and historically important places, and BEAUTIFUL scenery of course can be found in Kandy,Nuwara eliya.

you can find more info(just about everything) on www.srilanka.travel/

    have a wonderful stay :)

Couldn’t help but notice, but the rates quoted by CandyFloss are WAY TOO HIGH, because I just recently booked the HILTON for ONLY $130 through www.SuperSriLanka.com and so paid only half of the rates shown!

They also have great deals all over Sri Lanka, so why would anybody want to stay only in Colombo city when visiting this beautiful island?

I would suggest, first night NEGOMBO BEACH, close to the airport, nice reasonable beach hotels, good activities, etc., then KANDY to see the Tooth of Lord Buddha and other nice cultural sights, then NUWARA ELIYA or “little England” as it is known, tea plantations, majestic waterfalls, etc., and finally only the last day in Colombo.

When in Colombo, try to visit a Casino (24 Hours) for free food, free drinks, free cigs, free entertainment, and the best part is, with only $20 or 30 invested, you could walk out with hundreds (or at the very least, a great time!). I would recommend the Bellagio, free transport too!

Have a nice time in Sri Lanka!
