Should be 4 or 5 star. I want an excellent hotel in Shanghai BUT even more important is the location. The hotel should be in a good central area of Shanghai and not far away from where the nightlife is going on and not far from good dining and shopping choices. Thanks a lot in advance!

The Hyatt Grand in Shanghai is EXCELLENT. Have stayed there 6 or 7 times. Near business district and excellent entertainment/shopping.
I suppose some issues need to be addressed(I am Owner of a Travel Agency):
1-Dates of checkin/checkout?
2-In light of you wanting a 4-5 Star Hotel in Shanghai, what is your Hotel Budget?
It is simple enough to merely suggest a Hotel, but it of course would have to meet your criteria and at the same time NOT break your pocketbook. If you could kindly either call, email me at: indysteve1563@yahoo.com, or reach me through Yahoo Messenger with your criteria, I can research the best Hotel options that are available to you.

Top Choice:
Ruijin Guesthouse

I think the Rujin Guesthouse is an excellent choice. It is in a park like setting and provides an excellent break from the busy city life.
It is located on Rujin Er Lu and is bordered by Fuxing Lu and Maoming Nan Lu.
Inside the compound, there are several resturants and my favorite bar in Shanghai called Face Bar.
Maoming Lu is a bar street. It is not as active as it used to be but there are several bars there and a few good ones. My top two are Plan B (end of Maoming) and The House of Blues and Jazz.
There is a subway stop at the corner of Maoming and Huahai Zhong Lu (It is the Shangxi Nan Rd Station)
My favorite building in Shanghai is also a hotel:
The Heng Shan Moller Villa (Hengshan male bieshu fandian)
Address:30 Shaanxi Nan Road, Shanghai
ZipCode:200040
Telephone:021-62478881
Fax:021-62891020
For dining around this area there is
1. South Beauty 881… 881 Yannan Rd (near intersection of Shanxi rd)
2. Quanjude (Beijing Roast Duck) Huahai and Maoming
3. Dongbei Ren
(these are two of my favorites in the city)
For shopping, you are very close to Huahai Zhong Lu and all along Huahai Rd there is excellent shopping.

Area 2: Hengshan Rd
Top Choice:
Anting Villa Hotel (600-1000 RMB)
Address:46 Anting Road, Shanghai
ZipCode:200031
Telephone:021-64331188
Fax:021-64339726
It is located next to another of my favorite bars in Shanghai: Cotton.
This is the area I usually head to for going out to several bars. I like Zapata’s (free margs for ladies on wed nights), O’Malley’s, Oscar’s Pub, Eager Beaver… There is a metro stop not too far away. Shopping here is not the best. (Will probably want to head to Huahai Zhong Rd)
Other Hotels:
Regal International East Asia Hotel (Fuhau huanqiu dongya fandian)
Hengshan Hotel

Area 3: XinTianDi
88 XinTianDi
Address:380 Huanpi Nan Road, Shanghai
ZipCode:200021
Telephone:021-53838833
Fax:021-53838877
Distance from the airport ( Km ):13.5
Distance from the railway station ( Km ):4.5
Excellent area for dining (too many choices to mention), Shopping (close to Huahai more upscale; also closer to People’s Square/Nanjing Rd/Bund)
Popular nightlife, many clubs…. foreign prices for everything. Most overpriced place in Shanghai. BUT it might be worth it. More trendy than other places mentioned.

Area 4: The Bund
Hotel:
The Peace hotel (Heping fandian)
Address:20 Nanjing Dong Road, Shanghai
ZipCode:200001
Telephone:021-63216888,??:021-63291888
Fax:021-63290300
The Westin (hotel) is also not a bad choice (excellent brunch). It is also called the Bund Center and contains a Banyan Tree Spa.
There are many upscale bars and dining choices here. There is Whampoa Club, M on the Bund, Bund 18, Jean Georges and Bar Rouge (worth going to for seeing the skyline). Can walk along Nanjing Rd. for shopping.

Area 5: Where is it again? Oh, yeah, Pudong.
The Grand Hyatt in Pudong is tempting, but not on my list. Sorry, but I am a Puxi girl. It is located in the JinMao Building. It is the highest hotel in the world. Sadly, there is not much nightlife in Pudong.

Area 6: Nanjing Xi Lu
Portman Ritz-Carlton
Address:1376 Nanjing Xi Road, Shanghai
ZipCode:200040
Telephone:021-62798888
Fax:021-62798800
Many 5 star hotels and shopping malls. The Portman is probably the best one to stay at. There is good shopping and dining in this area. The nightlife leaves much to be desired. Many offices are located here. I feel it is more a place for working than a place for fun.
Tongren Lu is a bar street…. but quite dead.
Mint is worth going to (wed. ladies night)

I probably have not chosen the fanciest hotels. I have chosen some with historical significance that will help you caputre some of Shanghai’s colonial past which is a wonderful feeling of the city.
I have told you the hotels based on locations of where things are and where I would want to stay.
Check www.ctrip.com for discounted hotel prices. And more details about the places mentioned. (you can even use the service to make a reservation without paying anything)
There are many choices. These are the places I would pick if rich friends came to visit. I would be happy to stay at any of these places.
I am a foreigner, I live in China, I walk around. These are the hotels I think oh, I would like to stay there.

I have stayed in two hotels in Shanghai.
One was the JinJiangInn on off Changning Lu in Changning District (not a good experience)
And the JC Mandrain on Nanjing Xi Lu with a friend who stayed here on business.
I did not suggest either of these.
if you want shopping and nightlife DO NOT stay on the pudong side. you’ll regret it. the tunnel traffic is a nightmare!
try Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel or Sofitel Hyland Hotel. it’s a block from najing lu and it’s minutes away from shopping and tourist spots. walking distance to “the bund” or french concession
I have been n Shanghai only one single time but here is a good selection of Shanghai hotels:
