    The Howard Winchester Hotel.
In walking distance from King’s Cross Train/Tube Station (Zone 1)
It’s in a nice, clean, & quiet area with a nice little park just across the street.
Rooms are clean and comfy, not huge but it’s England so you can’t really expect huge. :o )
The staff is fantastic, very friendly and courteous.
    Not expensive.
I’m from the U.S. and travel to England quite a bit, I’ve stayed here the past 2 times.

There are a good number to choose from around Oxford Street in London. The Thistle Marble Arch, Selfridge Hotel, and the Leonard Hotel are all good value and pretty smart.
Also check out the Belgravia B&B which is more of a hotel than a guest house… I’ve added another hotel search link too, as you may find the rates cheaper on there..

    I’ve added the links below.

Oxford Road…Me thinks you mean OXFORD STREET

There’s something called ‘Central London’ if that’s what you mean (though i remember seeing a sign near borough high street/borough road mentioning ‘downtown’) so, perhaps you want to visit south london (as opposed to noth london)
