I live in Medford and this hotel has two buslines that stop right outside of it.

One is a commuter bus that runs during commuter times, 6-9 AM and 3-7 PM. They take the express route into Boston and make a few stops in the Haymarket Area.

You can also pickup a bus outside that takes you to Malden Train Station. You can then take a train on the Orange line to various stops in Boston. This is a decent commute as well.

Or you can take a bus to Wellington Train Station — also on the Orange line as above.

You can stay at the Hampton Inn in Cambridge, which is literally a 2 minute walk from the Green Line. Also, you could stay at the Holiday Inn in Brighton, again very close to the Green Line. Both will get you into Boston downtown in roughly 15 minutes or less. There’s a Holiday Inn, in Somerville, and a few other hotels, but you would need to take a bus/walk/taxi since they are slightly further from the train line.

None of the hotels mentioned by the above Answerers is anywhere near to economy.

There is an Economy Inn in Malden, served by two bus lines that go to Orange Line subway stations. There is a Red Roof Inn near Mishawum Station (Purple line Commuter Rail) but only 3 trains a day each way stop at Mishawum. All the trains stop at Anderson station, about 1km (2/3 mile) away.

There is a Comfort Inn and a Hampton Inn at Crosstown near the B.U. Medical Centre in the South End. about a 7 minute walk to the Silver Line and also served by busses to the Red Line subway.

If you change your mind about not staying in the downtown area there are 5 moderate (comparatively) European-style hotels that I know of: The Shawmut Inn (near North Station),
The Buckminster (right at Kenmore Square), The Milner (near Park Square, The Copley Inn (near Back Bay Station) and the Chandler Inn (near the Centre for the Arts). The last attracts a basically gay clientele.

Have you checked bed and breakfasts and city inns??
