Well, Long Island City is a long walk from Times Square. The neighborhood is in the Borough of Queens, which is about 10 minutes from Times Square by subway. However, hotel rooms in Long Island City are a lot cheaper than in Times Square, so you will be better off staying in LIC.
Speaking of hotel in LIC, may I recommend the link below which show a good list of hotel with rates under $130 a night.

I hope this information is very helpful.
Good luck
Hi,
To get an overview of all available hotels in NYC and their cheapest prices you can take a look at :

You cannot really walk from Long Island City to Times Square best to take the subway in. You are not really gonna find a decent hotel in Times Square for that price and if you found a place for the price, trust me you are not gonna want to stay there, and you might not be safe. Get a metro card and take the subway in from where you are in LIC.
I have used this bidding technique with priceline.com to get 4 or 5 star hotels at significant discounts in New York City. http://www.how2dothings.com/how-to-find-a-cheap-hotel-in-new-york-city-1177.html
Sometimes you can get up to 50% off. Hope this helps.
