There is nothing really outstanding to see in Chennai. The Marina Beach is big and it is within walking distance of the Triplican area. Decent and safe rooms 200-300rps.
Actually Chennai is a place only for the well heeled, if you have money, you can hang out, chill out and have fun. If you on a middle class or low string budget, then forget going out to see places. Because Chennai is cosmopolitan, hip and chic city.
You can stay in some lodge located opposite Chennai Central Railway Station … From the bathroom you can get a view of the Reservation building … Prices quite cheap, then rooms also look quite nice, the interiors. Not bad, as the hotel newly renovated I suppose, forgot the hotel name, but stayed there with my friends long time back.
Suggest you take a local train, go around the city in electric train … suburban train, then understand what really life is in this fast paced Chennai …
Then strongly suggest you to go to the Besant Nagar beach, watch the sunset there, have some peanuts from the road side vendor…
Then go to the wall on the beach, where all popular film stars and heroes have hang out in their films. Go there, smoke a Gold Flake King Size Cigarette, then go back to your lodge, really nothing much to see or enjoy in Chennai, with horrible traffic, sucks drinking water and humid climate which can make you always keep sweating even when raining or night time.
You can hang out at this cool shopping mall in Mylapore – it is known as CHENNAI CITI CENTRE. It has good crowd and some exciting stores like Lifestyle and Landmark. It also has a great Fun zone knwon as Funcity plus a superb Food Court and Inox multiplex. It is quite close to the Marina beach and has lot of closeby options to stay ranging from 1000 to 5000 Rs.
